Kristie Cornell is a photographer living and working in Lafayette, Louisiana. Trained as a geologist and employed as an educator, she occupies a space between the scientific and artistic worlds. Her work examines her relationship to the natural and cultural landscapes of her native Louisiana and the South, as well as her connection to places she explores while traveling. Observations made through her camera allow her to truly see a landscape, and the evocative images of the details and textures that she captures bring her understanding and appreciation of the environment to the viewer.
In 2023, she and collaborator Marla Kristicevich published the book Meander Mindset: Bayou Teche, an artistic exploration of one of South Louisiana’s most iconic waterways.
Kristie’s work has been shown regionally, including at The Acadiana Center for the Arts, Basin Arts, and Glide Studios in Lafayette, LA; and at the New Orleans Photo Alliance and The Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, LA. In 2024, she was invited to speak about her work at the Historic New Orleans Collection for the Jules L. Cahn John H. Lawrence Photography Lecture.
Process
Kristie works primarily with medium and large format film, using a variety of cameras including a Hasselblad 500c, a Graflex Graphic View II, an Intrepid Mark IV, and a handmade 8x10 pinhole camera.
She develops her own film and scans the negatives with an Epson V800 flatbed scanner for digital viewing. While she makes darkroom prints for personal use, prints available for purchase are chromogenic prints made from a digital version of the image.
